William Borden—No Reserve, No Retreat, No Regrets

William Borden was born into wealth. His family owned the Borden Dairy. But rather than joining the family business, young William’s life took a radical turn.

His mother was converted to Christ in what is now known as the Moody Church in Chicago. Young William heard the preaching of Dr. R.A. Turrey, and turned to Christ himself. He became a diligent student of the scriptures. At 16, he travelled to Europe, Asia and Africa.

After graduating from Princeton, William dedicated his life to missions in Northern Africa. He renounced his share of the family fortune and bequeathed $1 million to the China Inland Mission and other mission agencies.

Unfortunately, while on the mission field, William died of cerebral meningitis at the age of 25.

Upon his death, his mother found the following inscriptions by William in his Bible after 3 key events in his life:

–“No Reserve”—after renouncing the family fortune in favor of missions work
–“No Retreat”—after being told by his father that he could not work in the family business
–“No Regrets”—he penned these words shortly before his death in Egypt.

No Retreat. No Reserve. No Regret. I’m reminded of a similar quote by another missionary who gave his life in view of the greater cause:

He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.
